There is a simple formula that we use in the industry that prompts an immediate screening of whether or not a person has become dependent on alcohol.

If a person gets a DUI, there is a 50% chance that they have a drinking problem.

If a person gets two DUIs, without question they have a drinking problem.

The reason for that rationale is simple.

If you get a DUI, you go to jail for a night, you have to spend thousands of dollars on bail, lawyers, court costs, and fines.

If after that experience, you again get behind the wheel of a car after drinking, you can assume there is a force that is obviously more powerful than common sense and judgment. The force that overrides good judgment and common sense is a substance abuse problem.
