Communication can be difficult with someone that is impaired by substance abuse.

If you are committed to helping them and not just wanting to vent, I’ll share with you a strategy that you can implement immediately to change the outcomes of your conversations.

Start using “I” statements

Begin every single sentence with I as you are expressing yourself…
“I am hurt”

“I am worried”

“I am sick and tired”

This will help you communicate honestly and sincerely but will also prevent these statements from sounding like accusations and put the person on the defensive.

Do you think it’s too simple? It’s not. It’s very powerful. Test it.
